Charles Gary Wells Jr., 32, of Montgomery, Alabama, was a Warrant Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was killed by hostile action in Asr Tin, Iraq, on March 30, 2005.

Their Story

Charles Gary Wells Jr. was a 32-year-old Marine Corps Warrant Officer from Montgomery, Alabama. He served with Motor Transport Company A, 6th Motor Transport Battalion, part of Combat Logistics Battalion 2, 1st Force Service Support Group (Forward), which fell under the 4th Force Service Support Group based in Orlando, Florida.

On March 30, 2005, Wells was killed by hostile action in Asr Tin, Iraq. The Department of Defense casualty report listed his death as occurring during combat operations. Specific details of the incident, such as whether it involved an improvised explosive device or small-arms fire, were not publicly detailed in major news releases at the time.

Wells died during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a period marked by intense counterinsurgency warfare following the initial 2003 invasion. The years 2005 to 2007 were the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. forces, with frequent attacks on military convoys and patrols. His unit's role in motor transport placed it regularly on the road, a high-risk assignment.

His death was recorded by the Department of Defense and reported by news outlets including the Montgomery Advertiser. He was one of at least 10 service members from Alabama killed in Iraq that month, according to contemporary reporting.

Wells is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and other online registries of the fallen. His name is listed among the 4,418 American service members who died during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
