Andrew Robert Weiss was a 28-year-old sergeant from Lafayette, Indiana. He served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas.
On May 3, 2007, Sergeant Weiss died in Baghdad, Iraq. The Department of Defense announced he was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations.
His death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence and insurgent activity following the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque. The years 2006 and 2007 were among the deadliest of Operation Iraqi Freedom for U.S. forces and Iraqi civilians.
Weiss's death was reported by national and local news outlets, including the Journal & Courier in his hometown of Lafayette. The Department of Defense formally notified his family.
Sergeant Weiss is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and by his unit. His name is listed on the 1st Cavalry Division's memorial at Fort Hood.
