U.S. Army Sergeant David Thomas Weir, 23, of Cleveland, Tennessee, was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, on September 14, 2006, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Their Story

David Thomas Weir was a 23-year-old from Cleveland, Tennessee. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On September 14, 2006, Sergeant Weir was killed in Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his patrol encountered enemy small arms fire in the Iraqi capital.

His death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence in Iraq. The conflict, which began with the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, saw a sharp escalation in casualties following the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque in Samarra.

Weir's death was reported by multiple news outlets, including the Chattanooga Times Free Press, which noted his local ties. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.

Sergeant Weir was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He is memorialized on the 101st Airborne Division's Global War on Terrorism monument at Fort Campbell.
