Their Story

David Gardner Weimortz was a 28-year-old Marine from Irmo, South Carolina. He served as a Corporal with Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, part of the I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). His unit was based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

On August 26, 2006, Corporal Weimortz was killed by hostile action in Habbaniyah, Iraq. The U.S. Department of Defense casualty announcement did not provide further specifics on the incident. Habbaniyah is a city in Anbar province, west of Baghdad.

Weimortz died during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By mid-2006, U.S. and Iraqi forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in Anbar province, a center of the Sunni insurgency and Al-Qaeda in Iraq activity.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local South Carolina media. He was survived by his family, including his parents, in Irmo.

Corporal Weimortz is memorialized on the 'Faces of the Fallen' page maintained by the Washington Post and on other online memorials for service members killed in Iraq. His name appears on the Iraq War Memorial in Columbia, South Carolina.
