Ian Patrick Weikel was a 31-year-old captain in the United States Army from Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was assigned to Troop A, 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas.
According to the Department of Defense, Captain Weikel died on April 18, 2006, in Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations. Another soldier, Specialist Robert E. Hall Jr., was killed in the same incident.
Weikel's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By 2006, the conflict had evolved into a complex counterinsurgency and sectarian civil war, with attacks by improvised explosive devices representing a leading cause of coalition casualties.
The Department of Defense announced his death on April 20, 2006. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain. A memorial service was held for him at Fort Hood.
Captain Weikel was survived by his wife and parents. His name is inscribed on the Iraq War Memorial in his hometown of Colorado Springs and is listed on Panel 07E, Row 099 of the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which honors those killed in the 2001 attack and subsequent wars.
