Their Story

Michael Ross Weidemann was a 23-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from Newport, Rhode Island. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Brigade Combat Team based in Giessen, Germany.

On October 31, 2006, Sergeant Weidemann was killed at Al Asad Airbase in Iraq's Anbar province. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his unit came under indirect fire from enemy forces. The attack involved mortar or rocket fire targeting the base.

Weidemann's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2006, the war was in a period of intense sectarian violence and insurgency, with Anbar province a focal point for attacks against coalition forces.

The Department of Defense announced his death on November 2, 2006. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. His name is inscribed on Panel 12E, Line 12 of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum's memorial for victims of the subsequent wars.

Sergeant Weidemann was one of 4,418 American service members who died during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, continued its deployment in Iraq following his death.
