Their Story

Kyle Brett Wehrly was a 28-year-old soldier from Galesburg, Illinois. He served as a Sergeant First Class in Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 123rd Field Artillery Regiment of the Illinois Army National Guard, based in Macomb.

On November 3, 2005, Wehrly was killed by hostile action in Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. The Department of Defense casualty report listed his death as resulting from enemy fire, though specific details of the engagement were not widely released in initial announcements.

Wehrly's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2005, the war had evolved into a complex counterinsurgency campaign, with Balad being a major logistics hub and frequent site of attacks against coalition forces.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense and local Illinois media. He was survived by his wife and other family members. Memorial services were held in his hometown of Galesburg.

Sergeant First Class Wehrly is memorialized on the Illinois Fallen Heroes website and at the Galesburg Veterans Memorial. His name is inscribed on Panel 10, Row 117 of the Illinois Freedom Memorial in Springfield.
