Their Story
Robert Francis Weber was a 22-year-old soldier from Cincinnati, Ohio. He served with Battery B, 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, based out of Fort Lewis, Washington, before deploying to Iraq.
On September 30, 2006, Corporal Weber died from wounds sustained during combat operations in Q-West, a major U.S. military base near the city of Qayyarah in northern Iraq. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he was killed by enemy small-arms fire.
Weber's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2006, the war had entered a period of intense sectarian violence and insurgency, with U.S. forces engaged in major combat and stabilization efforts across the country.
Following his death, Weber was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His funeral was held in his hometown of Cincinnati, where he was remembered by family and fellow soldiers.
Corporal Weber is memorialized on the Iraq War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery, continued its deployment in Iraq following his death.
