Webber, Matthew Alan
Sgt. Matthew Alan Webber, 23, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was a member of the Michigan Army National Guard. He died on April 27, 2006, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, from wounds sustained in Iraq.
Their Story
Matthew Alan Webber was a 23-year-old from Kalamazoo, Michigan, who served as a sergeant in Company B, 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment, part of the Michigan Army National Guard based in Saginaw. He was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
According to the Department of Defense, Sgt. Webber died on April 27, 2006, at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He had been evacuated from Iraq after being wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on patrol in Baghdad on April 23, 2006.
Operation Iraqi Freedom, which began in March 2003, saw intense combat and a rise in insurgent tactics, including IED attacks, during the period of Webber's deployment. The years 2005-2007 were among the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. forces.
The Michigan National Guard confirmed his death. A funeral service was held in Kalamazoo, and he was buried at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.
Sgt. Webber is remembered on memorials for Michigan's fallen soldiers. His name is inscribed on the Michigan Heroes Museum's memorial and is included in the Michigan Military and Veterans Hall of Honor.
