Their Story
Charles Joseph Webb was a 22-year-old sergeant from Hamilton, Ohio. He served with Alpha Company, 82nd Engineer Battalion, part of the 1st Infantry Division, based in Bamberg, Germany, before deploying to Iraq.
On November 3, 2004, Sgt. Webb was killed in Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) while he was on patrol. He was one of at least four U.S. service members killed in separate attacks across Iraq that day.
Webb's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2004, the mission had shifted from major combat operations to counterinsurgency, with U.S. forces facing sustained attacks from insurgent groups using IEDs, ambushes, and rocket fire.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and covered by local Ohio media. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His family and community in Butler County, Ohio, held memorial services.
Sgt. Webb is memorialized on the 1st Infantry Division's casualty list and on the Iraq War memorial at the Hamilton Veterans Memorial. His name is also inscribed on the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial Wall in Sunbury.
