Lance Corporal Brandon James Webb, 20, of Swartz Creek, Michigan, was a U.S. Marine killed in hostile action on June 20, 2006, in Al Karmah, Iraq.

Their Story

Brandon James Webb grew up in Swartz Creek, Michigan, a suburb of Flint. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a rifleman to Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, part of the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, California. His unit deployed to Iraq in 2006 as part of Regimental Combat Team 5.

On June 20, 2006, Lance Corporal Webb was on patrol in the city of Al Karmah, located in Iraq's volatile Anbar province. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted security patrol. The area was a known insurgent stronghold at the time.

Webb's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By mid-2006, the war had entered a phase of intense sectarian violence and a persistent insurgency against coalition and Iraqi government forces. Al Karmah was a frequent site of clashes between U.S. Marines and insurgent fighters.

Webb's body was returned to Michigan for burial. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His death was reported by local Michigan newspapers and the Department of Defense casualty lists, noting his service and hometown.

He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his battalion. His name is inscribed on the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines memorial at Camp Pendleton and on the Global War on Terrorism memorial in Flint, Michigan.
