Weaver, Drew William
Lance Corporal Drew William Weaver, a 20-year-old U.S. Marine from Saint Charles, Missouri, was killed in a hostile incident at Camp Al Asad, Iraq, on February 21, 2008.
Their Story
Drew William Weaver was a 20-year-old Marine from Saint Charles, Missouri. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, based out of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California. His unit was deployed to Iraq as part of Regimental Combat Team 5 under the I Marine Expeditionary Force.
On February 21, 2008, Weaver died at Camp Al Asad, a major U.S. airbase in Iraq's Anbar Province. The Marine Corps listed the cause as hostile. According to subsequent reporting, the base came under indirect fire, a term typically referring to rocket or mortar attacks, on that date.
Weaver's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By early 2008, the U.S. military was implementing a troop surge strategy, which had contributed to a reduction in overall violence in Anbar Province, though attacks on coalition forces continued.
Following his death, Weaver's body was returned to Missouri. He was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. An obituary noted he was survived by his parents and siblings.
Lance Corporal Weaver is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and in the records of the Defense Department's casualty lists. His name is among those of service members killed during the war.
