He served in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the coastal patrol ship USS Firebolt (PC 12), homeported in Virginia Beach, Virginia. According to the Department of Defense, he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On April 24, 2004, Watts was killed in a hostile action in the port city of Umm Qasr in southern Iraq. According to U.S. Central Command, the incident involved an explosive ordnance disposal team.
