Their Story

Kelly Everett Charles Watters was a 19-year-old from Virginia Beach, Virginia, who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned as a lance corporal to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit deployed to Iraq in early 2008 as part of Regimental Combat Team 1, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

On June 6, 2008, Watters was on patrol in the Anbar province of Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He sustained severe injuries in the blast. He was evacuated from Iraq for medical treatment and transferred to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

Operation Iraqi Freedom was a major conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By 2008, the war had entered a phase characterized by counterinsurgency operations, particularly in provinces like Anbar where IEDs were a primary threat to coalition forces. The U.S. military surge of 2007-2008 aimed to stabilize the country.

Watters died from his wounds at the Bethesda hospital on June 11, 2008, five days after the attack. His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local Virginia media. He was survived by his parents and siblings.

Lance Cpl. Watters was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is memorialized on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Virginia Beach and is listed on the Iraq War casualty roster maintained by the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count.
