Sgt. Kimel Lincola Watt, 21, of Brooklyn, New York, was a U.S. Army field artilleryman. He died on June 3, 2007, in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds sustained in a hostile incident.
Their Story
Kimel Lincola Watt was a 21-year-old sergeant from Brooklyn, New York. He served in Battery C, 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team based in Schweinfurt, Germany. Watt was deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Watt died on June 3, 2007, in Baghdad. The official cause was listed as wounds sustained from enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted security patrol. The incident occurred in the Adhamiyah district of the Iraqi capital.
Watt's death came during a period of intense urban warfare in Baghdad, part of a U.S. troop surge aimed at stabilizing the city. By mid-2007, insurgent attacks using small arms, improvised explosive devices, and indirect fire were a daily occurrence for coalition forces operating in the capital.
Watt was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York. His name is inscribed on the Iraq War Memorial at the Brooklyn Borough Hall.
He is remembered by family and fellow soldiers as a dedicated professional. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery, continued its deployment in Iraq for several more months following his death.
