Their Story

Timothy Dee Watkins was a 24-year-old specialist from San Bernardino, California, assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, part of the 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Benning, Georgia. His unit deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On October 15, 2005, Watkins was on patrol in the city of Ar Ramadi, the capital of Iraq's volatile Anbar province. According to U.S. military reports, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. He was killed in the blast.

Watkins's death occurred during a period of intense combat in Iraq. The years 2005 to 2007 saw the deadliest fighting of the war, marked by a Sunni-led insurgency, a surge in sectarian violence, and widespread use of IEDs against coalition forces. Ar Ramadi was a major insurgent stronghold.

The Department of Defense announced his death on October 17, 2005. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States.

Watkins is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Benning and by veterans of his unit. His name is inscribed on Panel 07E, Row 125 of the Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Bakersfield, California.
