Staff Sergeant Javares Javon Washington, 27, of Pensacola, Florida, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in Kuwait on February 11, 2008, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
Staff Sergeant Javares Javon Washington was a 27-year-old soldier from Pensacola, Florida. He served with Company F, 6th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Washington died on February 11, 2008, in a non-combat incident at Camp Buehring, a staging base in the Udairi Range complex in Kuwait, often referred to by the area designations Ironhorse and Aspen Extension. The Department of Defense stated his death was under investigation.
His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. By early 2008, the U.S. military was implementing a troop surge strategy in Iraq, while Kuwait served as a critical logistical and transit hub for coalition forces.
According to the Pentagon, Washington's death was not the result of hostile action. He was one of at least 41 U.S. service members to die in Kuwait during the Iraq War, many from accidents or illness. His unit, part of the 101st Airborne Division, was involved in aviation operations supporting the war effort.
Washington is memorialized on the Pentagon's casualty list and by veterans' groups. He is one of 4,418 American service members who died during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
