Private Nachez Little Fawn II Washalanta, a 21-year-old U.S. Marine from Mead, Oklahoma, was killed in hostile action in Iraq's Al Anbar province on August 21, 2004.

Their Story

Nachez Little Fawn II Washalanta was a 21-year-old from the small community of Mead, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a Private to Weapons Company, 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 7, of the 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California.

On August 21, 2004, Washalanta was killed in Al Anbar province, a volatile western region of Iraq. According to the Department of Defense, his death resulted from hostile action. Specific details of the engagement were not widely reported, but his unit was part of a major U.S. military presence in the province during a period of intense insurgent activity.

Washalanta's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By mid-2004, the mission had shifted from major combat operations to counterinsurgency and stabilization efforts, with Al Anbar province emerging as a focal point of resistance and frequent combat.

His death was recorded in official casualty lists released by the Department of Defense. He was one of over 850 U.S. service members killed in Iraq in 2004, a year that saw a significant escalation in violence following the formal transfer of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government.

Washalanta is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and in local tributes in Oklahoma. His name is listed on Panel 01W, Row 022 of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.
