Sgt. 1st Class Charles Houghton Warren was a 36-year-old soldier from Duluth, Georgia. He served with the Georgia Army National Guard's Company C, 648th Engineer Battalion, 48th Infantry Brigade, which was operating as part of Task Force Baghdad.
Warren died in Baghdad on August 3, 2005. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during a convoy mission.
His death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence and insurgent activity in the Iraq War, also known as Operation Iraqi Freedom. The years 2005 to 2007 were among the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. forces and Iraqi civilians.
The Department of Defense announced his death on August 4, 2005. His unit was based in Statesboro, Georgia, and his loss was reported by local and national news outlets.
