Lance Cpl. Richard Daniel Warner, 22, of Waukesha, Wisconsin, was a U.S. Marine killed in hostile action on December 13, 2004, in Yusufiyah, Iraq.

Their Story

Richard Daniel Warner was a 22-year-old lance corporal from Waukesha, Wisconsin. He served with the United States Marine Corps Reserve, assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the 4th Marine Division, based in Milwaukee.

On December 13, 2004, Warner was killed during a security and stabilization operation in the town of Yusufiyah, located in the volatile region south of Baghdad known as the 'Triangle of Death.' The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action, though specific details of the engagement were not widely released.

Warner's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2004, the declared end of major combat operations had given way to a sustained and lethal insurgency targeting coalition forces and the nascent Iraqi government.

Following his death, Warner was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His hometown of Waukesha held memorial services, and he was remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated Marine.

He is memorialized on the Iraq War Memorial in Waukesha and on the online 'Faces of the Fallen' database. His name is also inscribed on Panel 2W, Row 015 of the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, D.C.
