Their Story
Christopher Tyler Warndorf was a 21-year-old Marine from Burlington, Kentucky. He served as a Corporal with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, part of the 2nd Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Corporal Warndorf died on August 29, 2006, in the city of Ar Ramadi, the capital of Iraq's volatile Anbar province. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations. His death occurred during a period of intense urban warfare in the city.
In 2006, Ar Ramadi was a focal point of the Sunni insurgency against U.S. and Iraqi government forces. The years 2005-2007 were the deadliest of the war for U.S. forces.
Warndorf's death was reported by the Department of Defense and local Kentucky news outlets. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His funeral was held in his hometown of Burlington.
He is remembered on memorial walls in Kentucky and at Camp Lejeune. His name is inscribed on Panel 2R, Line 120 of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial in Oak Grove, Kentucky.
