Their Story

Corporal William Troy Warford III was a 24-year-old soldier from Temple, Texas. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army's Company F, 215th Brigade Support Battalion, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

On September 5, 2007, Warford was killed in the town of Ad Dujayl, approximately 40 miles north of Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, the cause was a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack. He was one of two soldiers from his unit killed in the incident.

Warford's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence in Iraq, following the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque in Samarra. The years 2005-2007 were the deadliest of Operation Iraqi Freedom for U.S. forces, with insurgent attacks, including complex IED and suicide bombings, at their peak.

Warford was posthumously promoted from Specialist to Corporal. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. A memorial service was held in Texas, and his name is inscribed on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at Fort Hood.

Corporal Warford is memorialized on Panel 25E, Line 110 of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum's 'Honor Roll' of service members killed in subsequent operations. His unit, the 215th Brigade Support Battalion, was part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, which sustained significant casualties during its 2006-2008 deployment.
