Ware, Joshua Jerald
U.S. Marine Corporal Joshua Jerald Ware, 20, of Apache, Oklahoma, was killed by hostile action in Ubaydi, Iraq, on November 16, 2005.
Their Story
Joshua Jerald Ware was a 20-year-old Marine from Apache, Oklahoma. He served as a corporal with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California, and was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On November 16, 2005, Corporal Ware was killed by hostile fire in the town of Ubaydi, located in Iraq's volatile Anbar province. The Department of Defense stated he died from wounds sustained during combat operations. Ubaydi was a known insurgent stronghold at the time, and U.S. forces were engaged in frequent, intense fighting in the region.
The year 2005 was one of the deadliest of Operation Iraqi Freedom for U.S. forces, with over 800 service members killed. Military operations in Anbar province, particularly in cities like Ubaydi and nearby Husaybah, were part of a broader campaign to disrupt insurgent networks and foreign fighter infiltration routes along the Syrian border.
Ware's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in several news publications covering military casualties. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal. His funeral was held in his hometown of Apache, Oklahoma.
Corporal Ware is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and by his unit. His name is listed on the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines memorial at Camp Pendleton, which honors members of the battalion who died during the Iraq War.
