Airman First Class Carl Jerome Ware Jr., 22, of Smyrna, Delaware, was killed in action on July 1, 2006, while serving with the U.S. Air Force at Camp Bucca, Iraq.

Their Story

Airman First Class Carl Jerome Ware Jr. was a 22-year-old security forces airman from Smyrna, Delaware. He was assigned to the 15th Security Forces Squadron based at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Ware died on July 1, 2006, from wounds sustained during a mortar attack on Camp Bucca, a large U.S. detention facility in southern Iraq. He was reportedly on guard duty when the base came under indirect fire.

Ware's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence in Iraq. The bombing of the al-Askari shrine in Samarra in February 2006 had triggered a wave of retaliatory attacks, making 2006 one of the deadliest years of the war for U.S. forces and Iraqi civilians. Insurgent mortar and rocket attacks on coalition bases were a persistent threat.

Following his death, the Air Force posthumously promoted Ware to the rank of Senior Airman. He was buried with military honors in his home state of Delaware. His family and community in Smyrna held memorial services to honor his service.

He is remembered on memorial walls at Hickam Air Force Base and within the 15th Security Forces Squadron. His name is also inscribed on the Delaware Veterans Memorial in Dover.
