U.S. Army Private Second Class Jason Maxwell Ward, 25, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq, on October 22, 2003.
Their Story
Jason Maxwell Ward was a 25-year-old soldier from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor Regiment, part of the 1st Armored Division based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
On October 22, 2003, Ward was killed in Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained when his M1A1 Abrams tank was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2003, the declared end of major combat operations had given way to a growing and lethal insurgency, characterized by ambushes and IED attacks against coalition forces.
The Pentagon announced Ward's death on October 24, 2003. He was survived by his mother and stepfather, who lived in Tulsa at the time.
Ward's name is inscribed on the Oklahoma Veterans Memorial. He is remembered among the more than 4,400 U.S. service members who died during the Iraq War.
