Their Story
Corporal Gary Wayne Walters Jr. was a 31-year-old soldier from Victoria, Texas. He served in Battery A, 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 3rd Infantry Division's Task Force Baghdad, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
On April 24, 2005, Walters was killed in Baghdad. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died from wounds sustained when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a major conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By 2005, the mission had shifted to counter-insurgency operations amid widespread violence targeting coalition forces and Iraqi civilians.
Following his death, Walters was posthumously promoted from specialist to corporal. He was survived by his wife and children. His funeral was held in his hometown of Victoria.
Corporal Walters is memorialized on the 3rd Infantry Division's monument at Fort Stewart and is listed on the Iraq War Memorial at the University of North Texas. His name appears on Panel 48 of the Texas Capitol's Iraq War memorial.
