Their Story

Justin Tyler Walsh was a 24-year-old sergeant from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He served as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technician with the 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit was deployed to Iraq as part of the I Marine Expeditionary Force.

On September 30, 2006, Sgt. Walsh was conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq. He was severely wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED) while performing his duties as an EOD technician. He was evacuated from Iraq for medical treatment at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he died from his injuries on October 11, 2006.

Walsh's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a major conflict that began with the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. The war was characterized by intense counterinsurgency operations and widespread use of IEDs by opposing forces, which became the leading cause of U.S. casualties. EOD technicians like Walsh held one of the most dangerous roles, tasked with locating and disarming these devices.

According to local news reports, his death was met with grief in his Ohio hometown. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. A memorial service was held in Ohio, and he was buried at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.

Sgt. Walsh is remembered by his unit and community for his service in a critical and perilous military specialty. His name is inscribed on the Iraq War memorial in his hometown and is listed among the more than 4,400 U.S. service members who died during the conflict.
