U.S. Army Private First Class Jeffrey Robert Wallace, 20, of Hoopeston, Illinois, was killed in hostile action in Baghdad, Iraq, on May 24, 2005.
Their Story
Jeffrey Robert Wallace was a 20-year-old from Hoopeston, Illinois. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, assigned to H Battery, 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia. His unit was deployed to Iraq as part of Task Force Baghdad.
On May 24, 2005, Wallace was killed in Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during convoy operations.
His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By 2005, the mission had shifted to counter-insurgency and stabilization operations, with U.S. forces frequently targeted by roadside bombs and ambushes in urban areas like Baghdad.
Wallace's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local Illinois media. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and at Fort Stewart. His name is inscribed on Panel 9E, Row 111 of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
