U.S. Army Sergeant Andrew Peter Wallace, 25, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, died on September 26, 2005, in Shaibah, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
Andrew Peter Wallace was a 25-year-old from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He served as a sergeant in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, based in Fond du Lac.
On September 26, 2005, Sergeant Wallace was killed by hostile fire in Shaibah, a city in southern Iraq near the port of Umm Qasr. According to the Department of Defense, he was on patrol when his unit came under attack.
His death occurred during a period of sustained insurgent activity following the 2003 invasion. The U.S.-led coalition was engaged in counter-insurgency operations and training Iraqi security forces across the country.
Wallace's death was reported by national and local Wisconsin media. He was survived by his parents and siblings. A memorial service was held in Oshkosh.
He is listed on the Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Park's 'Wall of Honor' and remembered by his unit and community. His name is inscribed on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at the Wisconsin State Capitol.
