Wall, Mark Adam
Staff Sergeant Mark Adam Wall, 27, of Alden, Iowa, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in action on April 27, 2006, in Mosul, Iraq.
Their Story
Mark Adam Wall was from Alden, Iowa. He served as a Staff Sergeant in Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, part of the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, which was attached to the 101st Airborne Division. His unit was based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, before deploying to Iraq.
On April 27, 2006, Wall was conducting combat operations in the northern city of Mosul. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Stryker armored vehicle. Another soldier, Specialist Robert E. Blair, 22, of Ocala, Florida, was killed in the same incident.
Wall died during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a major conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By 2006, the war had entered a phase of intense insurgency and sectarian violence. Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city, was a frequent site of attacks against coalition and Iraqi forces.
The Department of Defense announced the deaths of Wall and Blair on April 29, 2006. Wall was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.
Wall is remembered on memorials in his home state of Iowa and nationally. His name is inscribed on Panel 07E, Row 085 of the National Infantry Museum's Global War on Terrorism Memorial in Columbus, Georgia.
