First Lieutenant Frank B. Walkup IV was from Woodbury, Tennessee. He was assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, 1st Lt. Walkup died on June 16, 2007, in Kirkuk, Iraq, from wounds sustained during a dismounted patrol. A military statement reported that his unit was conducting a security patrol when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position.

Walkup's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a period marked by intense sectarian violence and insurgent activity, particularly in northern Iraqi cities like Kirkuk. The years 2006 and 2007 were among the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. forces.

His death was reported by national and local news outlets. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He was survived by his parents and a sister.

He is remembered on memorials in Tennessee and Hawaii. His name is inscribed on Panel 20E, Row 86 of the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which honors those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
