Their Story
Zandra Terneice Walker was a 28-year-old soldier from Greenville, South Carolina. She served with the 615th Aviation Support Battalion, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, based out of Fort Hood, Texas, and was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
On August 15, 2007, Specialist Walker was killed in Taji, a city approximately 20 miles north of Baghdad. The U.S. Department of Defense listed the cause of her death as hostile action. According to contemporaneous reporting, her death occurred during a rocket or mortar attack on Camp Taji, a major coalition logistics base.
Operation Iraqi Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Iraq, began with an invasion in March 2003. By 2007, the conflict was marked by intense sectarian violence and a sustained insurgency against coalition and Iraqi government forces. The period saw frequent indirect fire attacks, including rocket and mortar strikes, on forward operating bases.
Walker's death was reported by multiple news outlets, including The Greenville News. Her body was returned to South Carolina, where she was buried with military honors at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Piedmont.
She is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and by her unit. Her name is listed on Panel 24E, Line 31 of the Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Arlington, Virginia.
