U.S. Army Specialist Kristofer Carl Walker, 20, of Creve Coeur, Illinois, died on October 2, 2006, in Taji, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
Kristofer Carl Walker was a 20-year-old from Creve Coeur, Illinois. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Troop A, 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Hood, Texas.
On October 2, 2006, Walker was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on a dismounted patrol in Taji, a city north of Baghdad. The Department of Defense confirmed his death was the result of hostile action.
Walker's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2006, the war had entered a period of intense sectarian violence and insurgent activity, with U.S. forces conducting counterinsurgency and stability operations across the country.
Following his death, Walker was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Good Conduct Medal. His funeral was held in his hometown, where he was remembered by family and community members.
He is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri. His name is also inscribed on Panel 21U, Line 28 of the National Veterans Memorial in Riverside, California.
