Their Story
Antwan Lavelle Walker was a 22-year-old soldier from Tampa, Florida. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army, assigned to Company B, 2nd Forward Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Task Force Liberty), based out of Fort Carson, Colorado.
On May 18, 2005, Sergeant Walker was killed by hostile fire in the city of Ramadi, the capital of Iraq's volatile Anbar province. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died when his unit came under small arms fire during combat operations.
Walker's death occurred during a period of intense and escalating violence in the Iraq War. In 2005, insurgent activity was widespread, particularly in Sunni-majority regions like Anbar. Ramadi was a frequent site of attacks against U.S. and Iraqi government forces as part of a broader insurgency.
Following his death, Sergeant Walker was returned to the United States. He was buried with military honors at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, on June 3, 2005.
Sergeant Walker is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and by his unit. His name is listed on the 2nd Marine Division memorial at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, reflecting his service with the Marine-led Task Force Liberty.
