Their Story
Steven Joseph Walberg was an 18-year-old from Paradise, California. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned as a Private First Class to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Walberg was killed on April 15, 2007, in Baghdad. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his unit encountered enemy small arms fire during combat operations.
His death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence in the Iraq War, also designated Operation Iraqi Freedom. The conflict, which began with the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, saw a significant escalation in violence following the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque in Samarra.
Walberg's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in regional media in California. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, according to military records.
He is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial in Orting, Washington, and his name appears on Panel 18E, Row 102 of the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which honors those killed in the 2001 attack and subsequent wars.
