Their Story
Dustin Scott Wakeman was a 25-year-old sergeant from Fort Worth, Texas. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Richardson, Alaska. Wakeman's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence and a major U.S. troop surge. The years 2006 and 2007 were among the deadliest of the war for U.S. forces and Iraqi civilians, marked by widespread insurgent activity and the use of IEDs as a primary weapon.
The Department of Defense announced his death on August 6, 2007. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States.
Sergeant Wakeman is remembered by his unit and community. His name is inscribed on the Iraq War Memorial at Fort Richardson and on Panel 22E, Line 114 of the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, D.C.
