Wahl, Gregory Leonard
U.S. Army Sergeant Gregory Leonard Wahl, 30, of Salisbury, North Carolina, was killed in action on May 3, 2004, in Balad, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Their Story
Gregory Leonard Wahl was a 30-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from Salisbury, North Carolina. He served with the 4th Armored Regiment's F Troop, based in Vilseck, Germany, as part of the active-duty force deployed to Iraq.
On May 3, 2004, Sergeant Wahl was killed in Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) while he was on patrol. He was one of at least three U.S. service members killed in separate IED attacks across Iraq that day.
Wahl's death occurred during a period of intense and escalating violence in the Iraq War, which began with the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By mid-2004, the conflict had transitioned from conventional warfare to a widespread insurgency, characterized by frequent ambushes and the use of IEDs against coalition forces and civilians.
Sergeant Wahl's death was reported by national and local news outlets. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Gregory Wahl is memorialized on the Iraq War Memorial in Salisbury, North Carolina, and on the online Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund's 'Wall of Faces,' which includes casualties from later conflicts. His name appears on Panel 8W, Line 111 of the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, which honors those killed in the Pentagon and in the subsequent wars.
