Their Story

Gregory Allen Wagner was a 35-year-old Staff Sergeant from Mitchell, South Dakota. He served with Battery C, 1st Battalion, 147th Field Artillery Regiment, a unit of the South Dakota Army National Guard based in Yankton.

On May 8, 2006, Wagner died in Baghdad. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. Specific details of the incident were not widely released in public reports.

Wagner's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence in the Iraq War, also known as Operation Iraqi Freedom. The February 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque in Samarra had escalated attacks across the country, making 2006 one of the deadliest years for U.S. forces.

His death was reported by local and national media. The South Dakota National Guard and community leaders in Mitchell publicly acknowledged his service and sacrifice.
