Christopher Allen Wagener was a 24-year-old sergeant from Fairview Heights, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army with C Company, 10th Aviation Battalion, based at Fort Drum, New York.

On July 1, 2004, Sgt. Wagener was killed in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. According to the Department of Defense, he died from hostile fire. His unit was part of the 10th Mountain Division, which had aviation assets supporting ground operations in the region.

His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, more than a year after the U.S.-led invasion. By mid-2004, the conflict had transitioned from conventional warfare to a persistent insurgency, with frequent attacks against coalition forces, particularly in urban centers like Mosul.

The Department of Defense announced his death on July 3, 2004. He was survived by his wife and other family members. His name is listed on the Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis, Washington, and on the Illinois Fallen Heroes Memorial.

Sgt. Wagener is remembered by his community and fellow soldiers. His name is inscribed on Panel 1W, Row 011 of the Illinois Vietnam and Iraq Veterans Memorial in Springfield.
