Their Story

Patrick Lee Wade was a 38-year-old Chief Petty Officer from Manawa, Wisconsin. He served with Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Eleven (EODMU-11), based in Oak Harbor, Washington.

On July 17, 2007, Wade was killed in Samarra, Iraq, north of Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained during a dismounted combat patrol. The specific hostile incident was not detailed in the initial release.

Wade's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian conflict in Iraq. The 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque in Samarra had escalated violence, and 2007 became one of the deadliest years of the war for U.S. forces, with over 900 American service members killed.

Wade was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with combat 'V' for valor and the Purple Heart. His funeral was held in his hometown of Manawa, Wisconsin, where he was remembered by family and community members.

He is memorialized on the Navy EOD Memorial at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, and on the Iraq War Memorial in his home state. His name is listed on the Defense Casualty Analysis System and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America memorial roll.
