Their Story

Jeremy Dale Vrooman was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He was assigned to Company C, 4th Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany. The 28-year-old was a native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

According to the Department of Defense, Vrooman died on July 15, 2008, in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. The attack was reported to have occurred in the Adhamiya district of the capital.

His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By 2008, the war had entered a phase characterized by counter-insurgency operations and persistent attacks using IEDs against coalition and Iraqi forces.

The Army posthumously awarded Vrooman the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His death was reported by local media in South Dakota, where he was remembered by family and former teachers.

Vrooman is memorialized on the South Dakota Veterans Memorial in Sioux Falls and on online memorials for fallen service members. He was survived by his wife and children.
