Their Story
Brent Thomas Vroman was a Private First Class in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He was assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The 21-year-old was a native of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
On December 13, 2004, PFC Vroman was killed during a security and stabilization operation in Yusufiyah, a town in the volatile "Triangle of Death" region south of Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, his unit was conducting combat operations when he died from hostile fire. No further specifics of the engagement were publicly released.
Vroman's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2004, the initial conventional war phase had transitioned into a protracted counterinsurgency campaign. The area around Yusufiyah was a known insurgent stronghold where improvised explosive devices and ambushes were common threats to coalition forces.
His death was announced by the Department of Defense in a press release dated December 15, 2004. Local media in Wisconsin reported on his passing, noting he was the second service member from the Oshkosh area to die in Iraq that year. He was survived by his parents and siblings.
PFC Vroman is memorialized on the Oshkosh West High School Veterans Memorial and on the Iraq War Memorial at the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh. His name is listed on the Global War on Terrorism Memorial in Milwaukee.
