Staff Sgt. Michael Scott Voss, 35, of Enosburg, Vermont, was a U.S. Army National Guard soldier serving with the 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry. He died in Kirkuk, Iraq, on October 8, 2004.

Their Story

Michael Scott Voss was a 35-year-old staff sergeant from the small town of Enosburg, Vermont. He served with the U.S. Army National Guard's Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, based in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Voss was killed on October 8, 2004, in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from injuries sustained when his patrol was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED).

His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a period marked by a growing and lethal insurgency. The initial invasion phase had concluded, and U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in counter-insurgency operations and stabilization efforts across the country.

The Vermont National Guard confirmed his death, and his loss was reported in local and national media. He was one of more than 130 American service members killed in Iraq during the month of October 2004.

Staff Sgt. Voss is memorialized on the Iraq War Memorial in his home state of Vermont. His name is also inscribed on Panel 1E, Row 11 of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
