Their Story
Matthew Joseph Vosbein was a 30-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from Metairie, Louisiana. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Sergeant Vosbein died on August 29, 2006, in the town of Sadr al Yusifiyah, southwest of Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol. The area was part of a volatile region known as the "Triangle of Death."
His death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence and insurgent activity in Iraq. The years 2005 to 2007 were the deadliest of Operation Iraqi Freedom for U.S. forces, with frequent attacks involving improvised explosive devices, ambushes, and direct fire.
The Department of Defense announced his death on August 31, 2006. He was survived by his wife and other family members. A memorial service was reportedly held at Fort Campbell.
Sergeant Vosbein is memorialized on the 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 2R, Line 124 of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial in Oak Grove, Kentucky.
