Their Story

Chad Joseph Vollmer was a 24-year-old sergeant from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He served with Company E, 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment, a Michigan Army National Guard unit that was part of the 46th Infantry Brigade, 38th Infantry Division.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Sergeant Vollmer died on December 23, 2006, from wounds sustained during combat operations in Salman Pak, a town southeast of Baghdad along the Tigris River. The area was known for insurgent activity at the time.

Vollmer's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence in Iraq. The years 2005 to 2007 were the deadliest of Operation Iraqi Freedom for U.S. forces, with insurgent attacks and roadside bombs causing significant casualties.

His death was reported by local Michigan media, including The Grand Rapids Press. He was one of at least 111 service members from Michigan killed in the Iraq war.

Sergeant Vollmer is memorialized on the Michigan Heroes Museum's 'Wall of Honor' and is listed on the Iraq War memorial at the Michigan Veterans Memorial at the State Capitol.
