U.S. Army Specialist Ross Eugene Vogel III, 27, of Red Lion, Pennsylvania, was killed in action on September 29, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Delta in Iraq.
Their Story
Ross Eugene Vogel III was a 27-year-old soldier from Red Lion, Pennsylvania. He served as a Specialist with Company B, 67th Signal Battalion, based out of Fort Gordon, Georgia. The battalion provides critical communications support for military operations.
Specialist Vogel died on September 29, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Delta, located near the city of Al Kut in Wasit Province, Iraq. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy indirect fire, a term often used to describe rocket or mortar attacks. No other details of the specific incident were publicly released.
Vogel's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2009, U.S. forces were in a period of transition, having handed over security responsibilities in urban areas to Iraqi forces earlier that summer. Insurgent attacks, however, continued across the country.
His death was reported by several Pennsylvania news outlets. The York Daily Record noted he was a 2001 graduate of Red Lion Area Senior High School. The Patriot-News of Harrisburg reported that he was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.
Specialist Vogel is memorialized on the website of the 67th Signal Battalion and on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial online. His name is included on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at Fort Gordon.
