Staff Sergeant Kimberly Ann Voelz, 27, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was a U.S. Army explosive ordnance disposal technician. She was killed by hostile action in Baghdad, Iraq, on December 14, 2003.

Their Story

Kimberly Ann Voelz grew up in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 703rd Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Detachment, based at Fort Knox, Kentucky. She was a Staff Sergeant and one of the first women in the Army to qualify as an EOD technician, a role involving the high-risk identification and disarmament of bombs and other explosive devices.

On December 14, 2003, Voelz was responding to a call about a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) in Baghdad. According to military reports, while she was investigating the scene, a secondary IED detonated. The explosion killed her instantly. She was 27 years old.

Voelz died during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By late 2003, the declared end of major combat operations had given way to a growing and lethal insurgency. The primary threat to coalition forces shifted to asymmetric warfare, particularly the widespread use of IEDs, which became the leading cause of casualties.

Her death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. She was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Her remains were returned to the United States, and she was buried in her hometown of Carlisle.

Staff Sergeant Voelz is remembered within the EOD community as a trailblazer. Her name is inscribed on the EOD Memorial at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, which honors technicians killed in the line of duty. Her story is cited in discussions about the evolving role of women in combat specialties within the U.S. military.
