Vinnedge, Anthony Michael Kress
Sgt. Anthony Michael Kress Vinnedge, 24, of Okeana, Ohio, served with the Ohio Army National Guard's Troop C, 2nd Squadron, 107th Cavalry. He was killed in action on July 5, 2007, in Baghdad, Iraq.
Their Story
Anthony Michael Kress Vinnedge grew up in Okeana, Ohio, a small community in Butler County. He enlisted in the Ohio Army National Guard, serving with Troop C, 2nd Squadron, 107th Cavalry Regiment, based in Greenville.
On July 5, 2007, Sgt. Vinnedge was on patrol in Baghdad when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. He was killed in the blast. The Department of Defense officially listed his death in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the same day.
Vinnedge died during a period of intense sectarian violence in Iraq, following the 2006 bombing of the Al-Askari Mosque in Samarra. The years 2005 to 2007 were among the deadliest for U.S. forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom, marked by a high tempo of insurgent attacks and IED incidents.
His death was reported by local Ohio media, including the Hamilton JournalNews. He was remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated soldier.
Sgt. Vinnedge is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and is listed on the Fallen Heroes of Ohio memorial. His name is inscribed on Panel 22E, Line 99 of the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial Wall in Reynoldsburg.
