Scott Michael Vincent, a 21-year-old U.S. Marine corporal from Bokoshe, Oklahoma, was killed in hostile action in Iraq's Al Anbar province on April 30, 2004.

Their Story

Scott Michael Vincent was born on August 21, 1982, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and grew up in the small town of Bokoshe, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a corporal to the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In early 2004, his unit was attached to the 1st Marine Division and deployed to Iraq.

On April 30, 2004, Corporal Vincent was killed by hostile fire in Iraq's Al Anbar province. According to the Department of Defense, he died during a firefight while conducting combat operations. The specific location and details of the engagement were not released in initial casualty reports.

Vincent's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in the Iraq War, also known as Operation Iraqi Freedom. In April 2004, U.S. Marines were engaged in major offensives against insurgent forces in Al Anbar, including the First Battle of Fallujah, which began that month. The province was a center of the Sunni Arab insurgency against coalition forces and the newly formed Iraqi government.

Vincent's body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with full military honors at Old Bokoshe Cemetery in Le Flore County, Oklahoma. The Defense Casualty Analysis System recorded his death on the day it occurred. His family and the community of Bokoshe held memorial services.

He is memorialized on the Iraq War Memorial in Oklahoma City and on the online 'Faces of the Fallen' database maintained by The Washington Post. His name is also inscribed on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in McAlester, Oklahoma.
