Their Story

Miguel Angel Villalon was born in Brownsville, Texas, and grew up in Joliet, Illinois. He joined the U.S. Army in 2018 and trained as a combat engineer. He was assigned to the 307th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and deployed to Afghanistan in late 2019.

On January 11, 2020, Specialist Villalon was on a route clearance patrol in Kandahar province. His vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. Villalon and another soldier, Sgt. Javier Jaguar Gutierrez, 28, were killed in the blast. The incident was reported by U.S. military officials in Afghanistan.

Villalon died during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in 2015. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan forces and conduct counterterrorism operations. By 2020, U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan were approximately 13,000, and the country remained one of the most heavily mined in the world.

Villalon's body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg, and he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal. His family in Illinois held a separate funeral service.

Villalon was remembered by his commanders as a dedicated soldier. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Park in his hometown of Joliet. He was one of 105 American service members killed during Operation Freedom's Sentinel between 2015 and its conclusion in 2021.
